"The Drakes: Trips & Trails

Wind River Range, Summer 2007

What a great week!

Great weather, light packs, good dogs, easy hiking, and virtually no bugs made for a really nice time in the Wind River Range. Most people seem to stay within a couple days hiking range of the trailhead. We got out a little farther. Here's a recap of the trip:

Trailhead campSaturday Drive

Left Leadville around 7:30 am for the drive to the Scab Creek Trailhead. Up through Steamboat Springs, CO, through Rock Springs, WY to Boulder, WY. Got to the trailhead (TH) around 3:30 pm. Found a dirt road just before the TH where we could camp, and let the dogs run free after spending the day sleeping in the car.

RainbowPine beetles are active up in the Winds too. Found a huge old pine with beetles boring holes in it. Could hear a crackling noise—sort of like Rice Krispies—which was either the beetles boring holes or the pine pitch trickling out in defense. We played mash the pine beetles for a bit. (c:<

A few sprinkles around 7 pm and then a beautiful rainbow appeared. Nice ending to a long day of driving.

Day 1–The Journey Begins ( 13 miles | View route )

On the Way to Divide LakeLeft the Scab Creek Trailhead on Sunday morning around 9 am. Including our car, there were eight cars at the hiker TH and three trucks with trailers at the livestock TH.

The first 6.4 miles are mostly through forest and that's where we encountered the majority of mosquitoes. Stopped for lunch at Little Divide Lake. Three horses with two people, six pack llamas with two people, and four hikers on their way out passed us while we were lunching. Chatted with Pack llamasanother two hikers on their way out before we got to the South Creek crossing. They highly recommended silver spinners and warned us of a big herd of sheep with guard dogs up the trail. Luckily, the herd had moved on. We were worried about running into the guard dogs with Star and Siri—even though they were on leash.

Had good weather until about 3pm when it started raining. We missed the Bob's Lake turn off and ended up on the Rainbow Lake Trail so backtracked over a hill to get to Bob's Lake. Got a break in the weather and had dinner on the rocks above Bob's Lake. The rain started again so we hit the Fremont Trail. Looked around the North end of Bob's Lake for a campsite in the trees but there was nothing great. Kept on truckin'

We were tired and cold when we got to Sandpoint Lake so made camp in an open area that looked like favorite spot for horse campers. Our luck—Siri found horse apples of which he is so found of rolling in. Siri got a bath before bed. Rained pretty good that night. With two wet dogs and wet gear in the tent, we had a good amount of condensation build up on the inside of the tent. Every raindrop that hit the tent made for our own indoor tent misting system.
