The Drakes: Trips & Trails

Wind River Range Gear, Summer 2007

Gearing up to go

We'll be spending five days backpacking around the Wind River Range. Starting and ending near Lander, WY. We have a couple loop options; will see how it goes when we get there. Okay, on to Plan C: The Dickinson Trailhead near Lander is closed indefinitely. We'll be headed to Pinedale and the Scab Creek Trailhead to hike in the Star and Siri at Firehole Lakesforest and loop around several lakes.

We've done a few backpack trips in prep this summer. A couple trips along the Colorado Trail and a couple to nearby lakes. The dogs love backpacking and it's a great bonding experience with them.

We've been getting our pack weight down considerably this year thanks to

1) Tarp tent
2) Lightweight sleeping bags
3) Freezerbag cooking
4) MSR Pocket Rocket stove
5) Primaloft jackets
6) Frogg Toggs raingear
7) Trail runners
8) Lots of little plastic bottles (in which we store stuff so that we don't have to take large containers)
9) Ursack

Before adding food, Julie's pack is weighing in around 18 lbs and Jim's at around 25 lbs (he's taking fishing gear). Food will add around 7.5 lbs each. Siri's carrying a pack at around 10lbs and Star's pack will be around 5lbs.

Adding to the weight we'll be carrying is the 8.1 oz bear spray canister. Everything you read says don't go without it so we bought some to be on the safe side.

We'll be hiking in trail runners as our packs will be considerably lighter than in the past and we anticipate some stream crossings. The trail runners will dry much faster than hiking boots. Post-hike note: Jim LOVED his inov8 terroc 330s! Julie's Montrail Hardrock's worked great too.
